If any Irish athlete deserves a farewell event in Croke Park, it is Katie Taylor.

Widely regarded as the greatest female boxer of all time, Taylor has transformed women’s boxing and inspired generations of athletes both in Ireland and around the world. From Olympic gold in London 2012 to becoming an undisputed world champion in two weight divisions, her achievements place her among Ireland’s greatest-ever sportspeople.

For years, Taylor has carried the Irish flag with pride on the biggest stages, fighting in iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden and selling out arenas across the globe. Yet she has never had the opportunity to headline a professional fight in Ireland’s most famous stadium.

Croke Park has hosted many sporting events and entertainment acts over the years. It would be fitting that one of Ireland’s most accomplished and respected athletes is finally given the chance to bring her remarkable career full circle in front of a packed home crowd.

The image of 80,000 fans waving tricolours as Katie Taylor walks out for the final fight of her career would be a historic moment for Irish sport. It would be a celebration not just of an incredible boxer, but of a trailblazer who changed the landscape of women’s sport forever.

Katie Taylor has earned her place in Croke Park. Now it looks like her dream – and the dream of Irish sporting fans – is finally about to become a reality.
