Waterford FC manager Graham Coughlan has urged his side to remain focused as they prepare to host St Patrick’s Athletic at the Regional Sports Centre on Friday night in the League of Ireland Premier Division.
The Blues head into the game in impressive form following a significant turnaround since Coughlan took charge, but the manager insists there is still plenty of work to do.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Coughlan said he always believed the squad was capable of climbing the table.
“I didn’t think they were a bottom-of-the-table team,” he said, praising the players for their commitment, honesty and willingness to embrace the changes introduced by the coaching staff.
Coughlan believes restoring confidence and simplifying the team’s approach has been key to their recent success.
“The confidence seems to be restored, and the self-belief has returned,” he said, adding that the players now have a clear understanding of their roles and are enjoying their football once again.
Despite Waterford’s recent momentum, Coughlan is refusing to look beyond Friday night’s encounter.
“We still have a job to do. The next game is massive, and that’s our only focus. We deal with one game at a time, and we’ll see where that takes us at the end of the season,” he said.
The Waterford boss also paid tribute to the club’s supporters, describing the reception he has received since arriving in the south east as exceptional.
“The fans have been brilliant. They’ve brought so much energy and have really got behind the team. Everywhere I’ve gone around Waterford, people have been welcoming and supportive,” Coughlan said.
Striker Tommy Lonergan echoed his manager’s comments, saying the squad has rediscovered its confidence under Coughlan.
“I feel like every player knows their role now. The energy around the club has been brilliant, and we’re really enjoying our football,” Lonergan said.
The in-form forward also dismissed speculation linking him with a move away during the transfer window, insisting he is happy at Waterford and focused solely on continuing his good form.
Looking ahead to Friday night’s visitors, Lonergan acknowledged the quality of St Patrick’s Athletic but believes Waterford are capable of extending their impressive run.
“They’re a top side, but I think we’ve got a great chance. We’ll give it everything and see where it takes us,” he said.
Kick-off at the Regional Sports Centre is at 8 pm on Friday as Waterford look to continue their climb up the League of Ireland Premier Division table.
