Gailltír and De La Salle go head-to-head in what promises to be a fascinating Clannad Care Waterford Senior A Camogie Final at Azzurri Walsh Park on Saturday at 3 pm.
Both sides have shown their attacking quality on the road to the final, but they took contrasting routes through the semi-finals, setting up an intriguing battle between two teams with plenty of scoring power.
Gailltír were particularly impressive in their semi-final victory over Cappoquin, recording a 5-26 to 0-7 win.
Molly Comerford contributed 1-5, Annie Fitzgerald hit 3-6, and Laoise Forrest added 1-11 in a dominant display. Forrest came into the side late and made a major impact, particularly from placed balls and three-point frees.
The return of former Waterford inter-county player Kate Lynch also provided a boost, with the forward coming off the bench after returning from travelling.
De La Salle had to work harder to book their place in the final, overcoming St Anne’s by 5-15 to 0-13.
They trailed by three points early on while playing into a strong breeze, but Beth Carton helped turn the contest around. Her influence was central to De La Salle’s performance, creating opportunities for Katie Mullane and Maggie Gostl, who were both impressive in attack.
The final promises an intriguing contest between two sides with significant attacking threats, but the performances of their respective goalkeepers could prove just as important.
Brianna O’Regan is expected to be a key figure for De La Salle, while Noelle Murphy will line out between the posts for Gailltír. Both have represented Waterford at inter-county level this year.
At the other end of the field, De La Salle’s Alannah McNulty will have a key role in defence, while Gailltír’s Shauna Fitzgerald will be important at full-back.
Maeve Sheridan could be tasked with marking Katie Mullane, while De La Salle captain Keeley Corbett Barry is likely to have a significant role in the middle of the field, where she could come up against the influential Aoife Power.
Gailltír’s potential full-forward line of Molly Comerford, Laoise Forrest and Annie Fitzgerald offers a formidable scoring threat, with De La Salle’s defensive unit facing a major test.
The strength of both benches could also prove decisive. Gailltír have options including Kate Lynch, Vicky O’Sullivan, Maria Brennan and Emma Fitzgerald, while De La Salle can call on Megan O’Connor, Courtney Healy, Isobel Boland and Sadie Carton.
Gailltír are managed by Darren Cooney, Michael Hayes, Marcella Healy, Emily Mahony and Alan White, with joint captains Maeve Sheridan and Alannah O’Sullivan.
De La Salle’s management team consists of Mark Douglas, John Keane, John Mullane, Joey Carton, Fergal O’Brien and Vicki McNulty, with Keeley Corbett Barry as captain.
With two talented teams, proven scorers and plenty of individual match-ups to watch, Saturday’s final promises to be an entertaining occasion at Azzurri Walsh Park.
