The curtain is set to come down on one of hurling’s most electrifying careers, with Shane O’Donnell announcing that he will retire from inter-county hurling at the end of the season.

The Shane O’Donnell decision marks the end of an outstanding chapter for both the player and Clare, with the Banner star having established himself as one of the finest forwards of his generation since bursting onto the scene in 2013.

The 2024 Hurler of the Year departs the inter-county stage with two All-Ireland titles to his name and leaves behind a legacy as one of the game’s most feared attackers. Known for his intelligent movement, blistering pace and ability to glide past defenders with ease, O’Donnell possessed a rare knack for creating scoring opportunities out of nothing and was always a major goal threat.

His performances over more than a decade in the saffron and blue earned him admiration across the hurling world, with his skill, vision and composure under pressure making him one of the standout players of the modern era.

In announcing his decision, O’Donnell said he felt now was the “right time to move on” from the inter-county game.

There is an added sense of poignancy to this weekend’s All-Ireland semi-final, with O’Donnell potentially set to make his final appearance for his county when Clare take on rivals Limerick for a place in the All-Ireland final.

Should it prove to be his final outing, O’Donnell will leave the inter-county game as one of the greatest forwards of his era and a player whose influence on Clare hurling will be remembered for many years to come.
