There is a real sense of anticipation building in Waterford ahead of this evening’s massive Munster Senior Hurling Championship clash between Waterford and Cork at Walsh Park.
Throw-in is at 6 pm, and the stakes could hardly be higher for the Déise, who know they need to take something from the game to keep their championship ambitions alive heading into the closing stages of the provincial campaign.
The fixture is one of the most iconic rivalries in modern hurling and has produced some unforgettable moments over the years, from dramatic Munster finals to legendary individual displays. Former Offaly hurler and pundit Michael Verney says supporters can expect another classic encounter this evening.
Speaking with WLR, Verney reflected on the rich history between the counties, referencing famous moments involving players such as Paul Flynn, Dan Shanahan, and Ken McGrath. He believes the atmosphere in Walsh Park could play a huge role in helping Waterford rise to the occasion.
While Waterford have shown glimpses of top-class form during this year’s championship, Verney believes their biggest challenge is producing a complete performance over the full 70 minutes. He pointed to previous games where the Déise have looked brilliant in spells but struggled for consistency across the entire contest.
The Offaly native says Waterford cannot afford to leave themselves “chasing their tail” against a Cork side that has impressed so far this season. He believes the Déise must start fast, bring intensity from the opening whistle, and look to test Cork’s reshaped defence early in the game.
Waterford have made two changes to the side, with Sean Mackey and Kevin Mahony coming into the starting fifteen, while Cork have also been forced into alterations at the back. Verney believes the physical battle inside could be an area where Waterford may find success, particularly if they use their bigger forwards effectively.
There is also strong excitement around the strength of Waterford’s bench, which includes experienced and game-changing options such as Tadhg de Búrca, Austin Gleeson, Shane Bennett, and Peter Hogan. Verney says modern championship hurling is increasingly decided in the final quarter and believes Waterford now have the depth to make a serious impact late in games.
Despite being an outsider looking in, Verney admitted he has always had a grá for Waterford hurling and says the championship is better when the Déise are competing deep into the summer.
A packed Walsh Park is expected this evening as supporters hope Waterford can deliver the type of performance needed to reignite their Munster campaign.
