Waterford suffered a heartbreaking one-point defeat to Cork in their opening TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Senior Football Championship Group 1 clash at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field, Dungarvan, on Saturday afternoon, as the Rebels edged a thrilling encounter by 1-15 to 1-14.
In a contest that saw the Déise lead from the opening minute until deep into injury time, Waterford looked on course for a famous victory over one of the championship favourites before Cork struck with the final score of the game to claim the points in dramatic fashion.
It was a performance full of determination, quality and resilience from Waterford, who matched their highly-rated opponents throughout and will feel unfortunate not to have come away with a victory.
Kellyanne Hogan led the scoring charge with an outstanding contribution of eight points. The Waterford forward was in superb form, converting five points from play and adding three from placed balls in a display of accuracy and composure.
Katie Murray and Lara McGregor both chipped in with important scores, while Bríd McMaugh contributed two points. Clare Walsh also found the target as Waterford consistently troubled the Cork defence.

One of Waterford’s standout performers was centre-back Karen McGrath, who produced an influential display at both ends of the field. McGrath finished with 1-1 and was central to much of Waterford’s best play. However, her afternoon ended prematurely when she was forced off with a head injury ten minutes from time, a setback that proved significant as Cork mounted their late comeback.
Waterford maintained their advantage for long periods and showed tremendous defensive discipline while continuing to carry an attacking threat. Their work rate and commitment ensured they remained in control against a Cork side packed with experience and championship pedigree.
However, the Rebels eventually found a way back into the contest in the closing stages. Katie Quirke, who finished with an impressive tally of 1-5, proved the match winner when she converted the decisive score in the 61st minute to edge Cork ahead for the first time all afternoon.
Moments later, the final whistle sounded, confirming a dramatic victory for the visitors and leaving Waterford players and supporters devastated after such a brave and impressive display.
Despite the disappointment, there are plenty of positives for Waterford to take from the performance. They demonstrated that they are more than capable of competing with the very best teams in the country and can take confidence from pushing Cork all the way.
Attention now turns to their second group game against Armagh, a fixture that has taken on added significance. Waterford know that a victory will be crucial if they are to keep their hopes of progressing in the championship alive and potentially challenge for a semi-final berth.
While the result ultimately went against them, Waterford’s display in Dungarvan showed the character, quality and belief within the squad. On another day, they could easily have been celebrating a memorable victory.
