Former Cork hurler Christopher Joyce believes the Rebels face a major challenge in reshaping their defence following the season-ending injury to Ciarán Joyce, but insists Cork still have enough depth to cope ahead of this weekend’s Munster SHC showdown with Waterford.

Speaking ahead of Saturday evening’s clash in Walsh Park, Joyce admitted losing Ciarán Joyce is a serious setback for Ben O’Connor’s side.

“Teams pick up injuries throughout the season, but obviously this is a big injury and a big loss for Cork. Cork are going to need to have a bit of a reshuffle and figure things out before the next championship game.”

Despite concerns over injuries in the Cork backline, Joyce pushed back against suggestions that Cork’s underage success has not translated strongly enough into senior depth.

Following Cork’s league final defeat to Limerick, some supporters questioned why experienced players such as Ger Millerick and Damien Cahalane were still being relied upon instead of younger talent.

Joyce believes experience still matters.

“Ger Millerick and Damien Cahalane are there for a reason. These guys are keeping the younger players out of the team for a reason. I don’t have much fear about what’s there.”

He also highlighted emerging options such as Micheál Mullins, Cormac O’Brien, and Tommy O’Connell as players capable of stepping up at the senior level.

Walsh Park factor could be huge

Joyce expects Cork to face a fierce atmosphere in Walsh Park, a venue where Waterford have enjoyed recent success against the Rebels.

“Going down to Walsh Park is a very difficult place to go. The Waterford crowd really get behind the team and the players have that bit more confidence when they’re playing there.”

The former Rebel defender believes home advantage could play a massive role in what is shaping up to be a crucial game for both counties, but more so for Waterford.

Cork’s dangerous full-forward line is impressing

Joyce was also full of praise for Cork’s current full-forward line, describing it as potentially the strongest in the country.

He singled out Brian Hayes, Alan Connolly, and rising star William Buckley for their impact so far this season.

“William Buckley has really stepped up to the level. He’ll get you three, four or five points a game. He’s been very impressive.”

Joyce also praised Hayes for the work he does off the ball, even when he is not dominating the scoring charts.

Cork defence faces Bennett challenge

With questions surrounding Cork’s defensive options, Joyce stressed the importance of experienced defenders such as Niall O’Leary and Sean O’Donoghue in trying to limit the influence of Waterford talisman Stephen Bennett.

Bennett has been in sensational form, scoring 4-22 in two championship games.

“You’re not going to keep Stephen Bennett quiet for 70 minutes. You just try to limit him as much as you can.”

Ben O’Connor is bringing steel to Cork

Joyce also believes selector Ben O’Connor has added a tougher edge to the Cork squad.

O’Connor has been outspoken publicly this season and has encouraged confidence within the group, something Joyce feels is vital if Cork are to challenge for the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

“His goal is to win the All-Ireland. Every team’s goal is to win the All-Ireland, but teams don’t always like to say that. Ben is open about it and he wants to put a bit of steel and belief into that team.”

Waterford are capable of upsetting Cork

While Cork travel to Walsh Park with momentum and four points already on the board, Joyce warned against underestimating Waterford.

He pointed to the quality within the Déise squad, including players such as Calum Lyons, Jamie Barron, Desi Hutchinson, Tadhg de Búrca, and Austin Gleeson.

“If Waterford put two halves together like they did against Tipp, they’ll be very hard to beat.”

Joyce believes the game is a knockout for Waterford and expects a massive performance in front of their home supporters as the Munster Championship intensity ramps up once again.
