Despite wet, windy, and damp conditions, a strong field of 175 runners took part in the 32nd Annual Dungarvan Leader Villierstown to Cappoquin Dromana 5-Mile Road Race.
The race attracted competitors from across Munster, with West Waterford AC’s Aidan Connell producing an impressive performance to claim victory in a time of 25 minutes and 8 seconds.
Gavin Sweeney of Togher AC, Cork, finished second, while Dermot Gorman of Carrick-on-Suir AC secured third place after another competitive running of the popular event.
West Waterford AC also enjoyed success in the women’s race. Natalie Sheehan was the first female finisher across the line, recording a time of 32 minutes and 46 seconds. Clubmate Niamh O’Donovan finished second, while Liz O’Shea of Grange Fermoy AC took third place.
The event once again showcased the strength of road running in the region, with athletes battling challenging weather conditions and a competitive field throughout the course.
Meanwhile, attention turns to Cork this weekend, where the Munster Senior, Under-20, and Masters Track and Field Championships are taking place at MTU Cork.
Competition gets underway today, with the field events beginning at 10.30 am and the Under-11 and Under-12 Combined Events starting at 11 am. The race walks are scheduled to commence at 12 noon.

The championships continue tomorrow, bringing together some of the province’s leading athletes across senior, underage, and masters categories.
