Limerick are Munster Senior Hurling Champions once again after a dramatic 1-21 to 2-17 victory over Cork in a thrilling provincial decider at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

In a contest that swung back and forth throughout, it was Peter Casey who proved the difference-maker, producing a man-of-the-match display and landing crucial scores in the closing stages as John Kiely’s men regained the title they lost to Cork on penalties last season.

The Rebels made the brighter start and struck for an early goal through Mark Coleman from the penalty spot after Brian Hayes was hauled down inside the square. Cork built a four-point advantage during the opening quarter, aided by the strong breeze, but Limerick gradually worked their way back into the game.

Gearóid Hegarty’s first-half goal proved a major boost for the visitors, helping them stay in touch despite Cork holding a 1-11 to 1-09 lead at the break.

Cork looked to be in control again shortly after half-time when Brian Hayes found the net for a second green flag, pushing the home side five points clear. However, Limerick refused to go away.

Inspired by the leadership of Cian Lynch and the accuracy of Aidan O’Connor from placed balls, the Treaty County slowly chipped away at the deficit.

Goalkeepers on both sides played starring roles, with Nickie Quaid producing several outstanding saves for Limerick, while Patrick Collins also came to Cork’s rescue on several occasions.

As the game entered the closing stages, the sides were level on multiple occasions before Peter Casey stepped up with a magnificent score from the right touchline to edge Limerick in front.

Casey wasn’t finished there, adding another vital point deep into injury time as Limerick stretched their lead to two.

Cork had one final opportunity to force extra time but couldn’t find the equaliser, and when the final whistle sounded, it sparked jubilant celebrations among the travelling support.

The victory sees Limerick claim their twelfth Munster title under John Kiely and continue their remarkable era of success. At the same time, Cork are left to reflect on a narrow defeat despite a spirited performance.

Adding further recognition to Limerick’s success, goalkeeper Nickie Quaid was named RTÉ Man of the Match after a series of crucial interventions that kept his side in contention throughout.

Final Score:
Cork 2-17
Limerick 1-21
