Ballygunner and Abbeyside-Ballinacourty meet today in a major Group A clash in the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Co. Waterford Senior Hurling Championship.

Throw-in is at 1 pm at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field in Dungarvan, with both sides unbeaten after their opening two games.

There is also recent county final history between the two clubs, with Ballygunner defeating Abbeyside-Ballinacourty in the 2024 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship final.

That victory saw Ballygunner claim an eleventh consecutive Waterford senior hurling title, with Pauric Mahony producing a man-of-the-match performance as the club continued their remarkable dominance of the county championship.

Ballygunner’s victory extended their unbeaten run to 58 matches, while veteran defender Shane O’Sullivan collected his 14th senior medal.

The reigning All-Ireland club champions opened their current championship campaign with an impressive 2-28 to 0-15 victory over Passage before recording another convincing win in Round 2, defeating De La Salle 1-27 to 0-18.

Mark Hartley and Conor Tobin have been among the players to impress for Ballygunner during their opening two games, with both continuing to establish themselves as important players within the club’s senior set-up.

Abbeyside-Ballinacourty have also made an impressive start to the championship.

They defeated Clonea 2-25 to 4-14 in their opening game before following that up with a 3-23 to 3-13 victory over Ferrybank.

The Abbeyside team possesses plenty of attacking threat, with Neil Montgomery and Charlie Treen all capable of causing problems for the Ballygunner defence, as well as the defensive powerhouse that is Conor Prunty.

Mikey Kiely also provides a significant goal-scoring threat for Abbeyside-Ballinacourty, adding another dangerous dimension to their attack.

That leaves both teams with two wins from two heading into today’s meeting, setting up a hugely-anticipated contest between two of the leading sides in Group A.

Ballygunner will be looking to continue their strong start as they aim to add another Waterford title to their impressive list of honours, while Abbeyside-Ballinacourty will be hoping to underline their own championship credentials with a major result against the reigning All-Ireland champions.

The game throws in at 1 pm at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field in Dungarvan.
