Waterford senior ladies footballer Chloe Fennell says confidence is high in the camp, but insists there will be no complacency as they prepare for a crucial Munster Senior Football Championship clash with Tipperary.

Waterford take on Tipperary on Sunday at 11.45 am in Cappoquin Logistics Friarfield in their final group stage game of the Munster Championship. A place in the Munster final is within touching distance, with anything other than a defeat likely to see Waterford progress.

Strong start sets the tone

Waterford come into the game with two wins from two, following impressive victories over Kerry and Cork.

Fennell says the group is in a positive place, but is well aware that nothing has been secured yet.

“Yeah, look, the last day against Cork was a great team performance, but I think that was built on the back of a good win down in Tralee,” she said.

“Wins do build confidence, so we’re very happy with how we’ve played, but there’s always stuff to work on. We won’t be resting on our laurels.”

Respect for Tipperary challenge

Despite Waterford’s strong form, Fennell is expecting a tough test from a Tipperary side that has produced mixed results in the campaign so far.

“We’ve always had good battles with them in Munster,” she said. “They’re a good side, very well organised defensively, and they can frustrate teams when they get it right.

“Our big thing is to use the ball well, not get dragged into traffic, and make the most of our possession.”

Tipperary’s defensive structure and low-scoring games have been a feature of their campaign, and Waterford are preparing for a physical, disciplined encounter.

New rules suiting Waterford’s style

Fennell also believes the evolving nature of the game has suited Waterford’s playing style, particularly the increased emphasis on quick restarts and physical contests.

“We’ve always been known as a running team, but we’ve grown into the physical side of things,” she explained.

“The new rules really suit us. The solo and go keeps the game moving and makes it more enjoyable to play and watch.”

Spread of scores a key strength

One of the standout features of Waterford’s campaign has been their spread of scorers, with multiple players contributing heavily across both wins.

Fennell says that shared responsibility has been crucial to their success.

“It’s great to see more girls backing themselves and taking on shots,” she said. “We’re not over-reliant on any one player.

“When teams look at us now, they can’t just focus on one threat. There are a lot of players capable of scoring.”

Munster final within reach

With a Munster final place on the line, Waterford know exactly what is at stake this weekend, but Fennell says the group is keeping their focus simple.

“The aim at the start of the year was to get back into a Munster final,” she said. “We were unlucky last year, so we’re hoping to go one step further this time.

“But it’s game by game. First, we need to get the job done against Tipperary.”

Waterford face Tipperary at 11.45 am on Sunday in Cappoquin Logistics Friarfield, with a place in the Munster final potentially on the line.
