WLR presents Dúchas na hÉireann (The Heritage of Ireland), a new five-part documentary series celebrating what makes this island unique.
The opening episode shines a light on the Kerry Bog Pony, a rare native breed rescued from the brink of extinction. Through intimate conversations with three breeders — including two from Waterford (Damien de Barra and Vicky Heslop) — the programme explores the pony’s remarkable toughness, gentle temperament, and deep connection to family and place. Tracing its journey from near disappearance to a carefully nurtured revival, the episode asks what it means to protect living heritage and why this small, honest pony still captures Irish hearts.
