Dungarvan now has a "spiritual connection" to our new Pope Leo XVI, who has visited the town in the past. This morning (Friday), 'Deise Today' spoke to Waterford cleric Fr Gerry Horan who has fond memories of meeting the new Pope on several occasions - and even journeying on a road trip around Ireland with him! Fr Gerry Horan, who is chaplain at St Augustine's College in Dungarvan and a former Provencial of the Augustine Order in Ireland, met Robert Prevost through the order (he is the first Pope who has come from that Order) and described the new Pope Leo XVI as a "very humble and down to earth man". Fr Horan described getting to know him particularly well on a road trip over 10-11 days when they were travelling around visiting various Augustine communities. "We were hours and hours chatting on that trip around Ireland in the car. We never ran short of anything to talk about as he is a great man to have a chat; absolutely down-to-earth."
