A young boy has died after a collision involving his bicycle and a parked lorry in Co Waterford this morning.

The tragedy happened shortly after 11am in Ballygalane, Lismore.

The boy, who was cycling, was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. The coroner has been notified.

The driver of the lorry, a man, was uninjured.

The road was closed to allow for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward. They are particularly keen to hear from any road users who were travelling on the N72 between Lismore and Cappoquin between 10.30am and 11.15am this morning and who may have camera or dashcam footage.
