Waterford residents are being invited to help preserve the names and stories attached to local places across the county.

Waterford City and County Council’s Placenames Committee is bringing its ‘Cad As Duit? Placenames of the Déise’ roadshow to Coolnasmear later this month.

The initiative aims to record local placenames which may not appear on official maps, including the names traditionally given to fields, boreens, fishing and swimming spots and other landmarks.

People are being encouraged to share names they know, along with any stories or history connected to them.

The latest event will take place at Cúl na Sméar Hall from 2pm until 4pm on Saturday, September 19th.

Visitors will be able to hear about the work of the Waterford Placenames Committee and learn how to search maps, records and other placename resources online.

Those attending will also have an opportunity to add their own local knowledge directly to maps being compiled as part of the project.

The free bilingual event is being organised by Waterford City and County Council’s Placenames Committee with support from Creative Ireland Waterford.

No booking is required and refreshments will be provided.
