Our Lady of Mercy SNS in Waterford has secured a joint first-place finish in this year’s Fyffes Fittest School competition.

Fyffes Fittest School, now in its fourth year, promotes the importance of exercise, fitness, and healthy eating among young people across Ireland.

The initiative features a series of exercise routines that schools can incorporate into their PE curriculum, helping students improve their fitness levels in a fun, engaging, and supportive environment.

Led by Irish health and fitness expert Sharon Flanagan alongside Olympian David Gillick, the programme combines physical activity with education around healthy lifestyles, while encouraging participation and teamwork among pupils.

A major part of the programme is the nationwide competition, where schools from every province compete in regional qualifiers for a place in the grand final and the chance to be crowned “Fyffes Fittest School.”

This year’s competition saw schools from across the country battle it out for the top honours and €5,000 worth of sports equipment for their school.

Previous winners of the competition include Scoil Na Croise Naofa in Donegal, Gilson National School in Meath, and St Mary’s Touraneena National School in Waterford, which claimed the title in 2024.

The joint first-place finish for Our Lady of Mercy SNS marks another major success story for Waterford schools in the national competition and highlights the school’s commitment to fitness, teamwork, and healthy living.
