Waterford people will be given an opportunity to have their say on the naming of the city’s new sustainable transport bridge.

The issue was raised by Cllr. Seamus Ryan at the latest Metropolitan District meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr. Ryan asked whether a public process would take place to allow people to get involved in choosing a name for the new crossing.

Roads Engineer Alan Kirwan confirmed that public engagement will form part of the naming process.

Waterford City and County Council has also previously confirmed that details of a bridge-naming public consultation will be announced.

The 207-metre bridge forms a major part of the North Quays Public Infrastructure Project and will connect the city’s north and south quays.

It is designed primarily for pedestrians and cyclists and will also connect with the city’s new integrated transport hub and wider walking and cycling infrastructure.

The bridge features an opening central span to allow river vessels to pass through and will provide a connection between Waterford and South East Greenway infrastructure through the city centre.

The new crossing is expected to open to the public in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Details on when and how Waterford people can submit suggestions for the bridge’s name have yet to be announced.
