New figures show mixed performance across cancer treatment services in Waterford.

Data from the National Cancer Control Programme shows Waterford’s radiotherapy service significantly exceeded its operational target during the first half of 2026.

Compliance with the radical radiotherapy treatment target stood at 99.3% in the first quarter and 98.8% in the second, against a target of 90%.

However, performance for systemic anti-cancer treatment remained below target.

The measure includes new patients beginning treatments such as chemotherapy, with a target of 90% starting treatment within 15 working days of being deemed ready.

Waterford recorded 63% compliance in the first quarter, improving to 78% in the second.

The figures were provided following Parliamentary Questions from Waterford TD and Sinn Féin health spokesperson David Cullinane.

Deputy Cullinane welcomed the performance of Waterford’s radiotherapy service but said the figures for other treatments remain a concern.

‘The operational target is 90%, so this is an exceptionally strong performance and the staff involved deserve huge credit,’ he said.

‘Unfortunately, the picture for systemic anti-cancer treatment is much more concerning.’

He has also raised concerns over the absence of a Waterford figure for breast cancer surgery for the first quarter of 2026 in the response he received.

Mr. Cullinane says he will seek further information from the HSE on why the systemic anti-cancer treatment target is not being met and whether additional staffing or capacity is required.
