Major progress has been made on the runway development at Waterford Airport, with works now 70% complete.

The airport has shared an update on social media showing the transformation of the site between May and September.

Work began with the turning of the first sod in May, and just four months later, the runway is visibly taking shape.

Waterford Airport highlighted the progress made in a relatively short period on a social-media post.

“What a difference a few months makes,” the airport said.

“In May, we turned the first sod. Now, in September, the runway is really taking shape.”

The airport also thanked those involved in the project for their continued efforts.

“Huge thanks to everyone working on site to make it happen.”

With Christmas approaching, the airport has invited the public to speculate on how much further the development will have progressed by the festive season.

“What do you think we’ll look like by Christmas?” it asked.

The runway development forms part of a major investment aimed at securing the long-term future of Waterford Airport and restoring scheduled commercial passenger flights to the South East.

Airport CEO William Bolster, has previously confirmed that discussions are ongoing with airlines about providing a service.

The project is seen as a significant step towards bringing commercial flights back to the airport, which has been without scheduled passenger services since 2016.

The redevelopment is being funded through a €30 million private investment and will see the runway extended to 2,287 metres and widened to 45 metres, allowing larger commercial aircraft to operate from the airport.
