Waterford Airport has teased some of the destinations people would most like to see served when commercial passenger flights return to the South East.

A social media post asking people where they would like to fly to from Waterford has attracted significant attention, garnering almost 1,500 likes and more than 600 comments.

The airport says more than 400 people responded to its original call for suggestions, naming over 60 different destinations.

London emerged as the clear favourite, while Málaga was also among the most popular suggestions.

Destinations put forward ranged from locations closer to home, including Co. Kerry, to long-haul destinations such as Rio de Janeiro.

One response highlighted the appetite for an alternative to travelling to Dublin Airport, with the commenter saying: “Anywhere. Anything to not have to face the M50 to Dublin Airport.”

However, Waterford Airport stressed that the exercise is not an announcement of new routes.

“We’re not announcing routes today. But we are listening, and we’re keeping the list,” the airport said.

“Follow along; you’ll hear it here first.”

The public engagement comes as work continues on the major redevelopment of Waterford Airport, aimed at facilitating the return of scheduled commercial passenger flights for the first time in more than a decade.

The €30 million redevelopment entered its construction phase earlier this year, with the first sod officially turned in May.

For now, London and Málaga may be at the top of the public’s wish list — but the airport has yet to confirm which destinations will actually feature on its future departure boards.
