A new medical syringe system supported by laboratories in Waterford has been launched on the global market.

West Synchrony™ S1 is a new prefillable syringe system designed for use with biologic medicines and vaccines supplied to patients by pharmaceutical companies around the world.

The Waterford laboratories of West Pharmaceutical Services, located on Carrickpherish Road, are the lead test site for the release of the new system.

The Waterford team is working alongside West colleagues in Germany and the United States on the project, which is designed to provide pharmaceutical companies with a fully verified system for drug delivery.

The company says the new system can help pharmaceutical companies speed up syringe selection, streamline design and accelerate regulatory submissions, while also supporting a reliable supply chain.

The Waterford laboratory team is responsible for all release testing for the West Synchrony™ S1 system.

Work on the project began in early 2024, with the team developing the equipment, capabilities and expertise required to support the system for global supply.

Members of the quality and engineering teams at the Waterford site are also involved in the project.

Samantha Baldwin, Senior Manager of Site Labs EU, said the Waterford site was pleased to have the opportunity to work on the new system.

She said the team had successfully transferred around 20 complex test methods from laboratories in the United States and Germany to Waterford over the past two years.

She said this had allowed the Waterford team to develop its skills while continuing to work with colleagues across West’s international operations.

The company says the work being carried out in Waterford will help ensure the West Synchrony™ S1 system meets quality and performance standards as it is supplied to customers worldwide.
