New HSE figures show Waterford had 83 GPs working in the county as of December 2025.

The figures, released to Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane, show that 71 GPs were providing services under the General Medical Services scheme, while 12 were practising privately.

The total number of GPs in Waterford has increased by three since 2020.

The figures come as the HSE confirms that 5,775 people nationally have contacted the health service this year after being unable to secure a GP themselves.

The data shows the number of GPs across the country has not matched population growth, with fewer than 200 new GPs added between 2020 and 2025, while the population increased by more than 480,000 people.

The figures also show that nationally, the number of GPs who took on private contracts between 2020 and 2025 was double the number who took on public contracts.

Sinn Féin has described the figures as representing a crisis point in access to GP services.
