Motorists are seeking clarity over the future of a section of Waterford’s ring road where the speed limit has been reduced to 60km/h, while the majority of the route remains at 80km/h.

The section between the Tramore Road roundabout and the Six Crossroads roundabouts has been operating under a 60km/h speed limit, creating a noticeable difference for drivers travelling along the route.

With the rest of the ring road remaining at 80km/h, questions have been raised about whether the reduced limit will remain in place or if the section will eventually return to the higher limit.

Waterford City and County Council has confirmed that the current reduction is temporary and is linked to works being carried out on that section of road.

The Council stated: “The speed limit reduction on the section referred to earlier is temporary due to works on that section, however, a countywide review of speed limits is being carried out in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Department of Transport for the Setting and Managing Speed Limits in Ireland.”

The Council has also confirmed that the Draft Bye-Laws and accompanying maps are now available for public consultation, with submissions open until Thursday, 13th August 2026.
