Waterford has marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks with a commemoration at the Bishop’s Palace Memorial Garden.

Mayor of Waterford City and County Cllr. Liam Brazil was joined by elected representatives, emergency services, community groups and members of the public for the ceremony on Friday, September 11th.

The event took place beside Waterford’s permanent 9/11 memorial, which includes a piece of structural steel recovered from the rubble of the World Trade Centre.

Those in attendance observed a moment of reflection in memory of the thousands of people who died in the attacks in 2001.

Cllr. Brazil paid tribute to the firefighters, police officers, paramedics and other first responders who risked their lives to help others.

He said: ‘Today, we honour those who died. We stand with those who survived. We recognise the families who have carried their grief for twenty-five years.’

Waterford crystal engraver Sean Egan also spoke at the ceremony about his personal connection to 9/11 and the relationships formed in the aftermath of the attacks.

Mr. Egan created a collection of commemorative crystal sculptures in memory of those who died, which are currently on display at the House of Waterford on The Mall.

He said he was grateful for the continued remembrance shown by people in Waterford.

The ceremony also recognised the acts of bravery and selflessness shown by emergency service personnel on the day of the attacks.
