Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and sociologist Professor Pat O’Connor have received honorary doctorates from South East Technological University.
The awards were presented at SETU Arena in Waterford today in recognition of their contributions to Irish society.
Mr Varadkar received his first honorary doctorate, while Professor O’Connor was recognised for her academic work and contribution to gender equality in higher education.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Varadkar said receiving the honour from SETU was particularly significant because of his connection to the South East.
‘SETU has a special place in my heart as the legislation providing for its establishment was passed during my first term as Taoiseach and it was formally established when I was Tánaiste,’ he said.
He added that he believes the university will become a ‘gamechanger for the region’, helping to attract investment, create new businesses and allow more people to access higher education close to home.
Mr. Varadkar served as Taoiseach on two occasions and became the youngest person to hold the office when first appointed in 2017.
Professor Pat O’Connor, Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Limerick, was awarded a Doctor of the University for her academic work and influence on gender equality.
She also has a longstanding connection with SETU, having worked at the institution from 1982 until 1991 as Course Director of the National Diploma in Child Care.
Professor O’Connor said her time at SETU helped shape her understanding of Ireland’s higher education system and subsequently influenced the direction of her career.
SETU President Professor Veronica Campbell said both recipients had made significant contributions through research, education, policy and public service.
