The water conservation order covering 13 counties has been lifted with immediate effect, two weeks earlier than planned.

Uisce Éireann confirmed the measure is being dropped following improved rainfall and water availability after an exceptionally hot and dry summer.

The utility has thanked the public for what it described as ‘extraordinary efforts’ to reduce water use while supplies were under pressure.

The order has now been lifted in Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.

The restrictions had been due to remain in place until the end of September.

Uisce Éireann said reduced demand helped protect supplies during a period of prolonged dry weather and high temperatures.

The lifting of the order means all remaining counties are now no longer subject to the conservation measure.
