Former Bosco presenter Gráinne Uí Mhaitiú has passed away at the age of 72.

The Wicklow woman presented the iconic children’s television show in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Gráinne also presented alongside Seán Bán Breathnach on the Irish language show SBB Ina Shuí.

She is survived by her husband Séamas, daughter Aoife and son Connla.

Gráinne’s death notice states that she passed away on Saturday ‘in the wonderful care of the staff’ at Tallaght University Hospital.

It also mentions that she will be sadly missed by her sisters Bríd and Aislinn, brother Cillín, grand-daughters Bláithín and Sadhbh, son-in-law Jarlath and a wide circle of friends.

One person wrote: ‘There is a generation of Irish people sad today at Gráinne’s passing. Her voice and vibrancy on screen is etched into my memory. Such great memories of simpler times. She was iconic and may she Rest In Eternal Peace. Sympathies to her family and friends.’

Another said: ‘Very sad to hear about Gráinne’s passing. She was part of my childhood and always came across as a lovely person. My thoughts are with her family and friends. May she rest in peace.’

A third added: ‘Sincerest condolences to Grainne’s family and friends on her passing. Wonderful memories of her beautiful face on our television when we were children. Her voice is so vivid in my memory when I see her picture. Gráinne made Irish easier to learn when I was a kid, and I hope my kids have as beautiful memories from TV from their youth.’

Yet another remarked: ‘Fond memories of Gráinne in Bosco with her cheery and vibrant presence. Such an 80’s icon for us primary school children. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.’
