Tributes are pouring in following the tragic death of an off-duty Garda Sergeant in a road traffic accident.

Sergeant Andrew O’Riordan of Mayorstone Garda Station in Limerick died in the single vehicle tragedy.

The Blarney, Co Cork native was described by his colleagues as a ‘well-respected member.’

The devastating crash occurred on the R466 at Gortnaglogh, Broadford, with Gardaí and emergency services attending the scene shortly after 5.30pm.

Sergeant O’Riordan, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for serious injuries.

An Garda Síochána took to social media paying tribute to Sergeant O’Riordan.

‘An Garda Síochána in Limerick and colleagues across the organisation would like to express their condolences to the family of Sergeant Andrew O’Riordan (RIP) of Mayorstone Garda Station, Limerick, who passed away yesterday following a fatal road traffic collision.

‘Our sympathies go out to wife Stephanie and their five children, parents Pat and Kathleen and sister Joanne.’

Social media users took to the comments to extend condolences, with one writing: ‘So sad to hear about Sergeant Andrew O’Riordan, a true hero and dedicated member of An Garda Síochána for 28 years.

‘Rest in peace. Condolences to family and friends.’

Another added: ‘Loved working with Andrew. May he rest in peace. My sincerest condolences to Andrew’s family friends and his Garda family.’

A third commented: ‘Heartbreaking! Sincere condolences to all his family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace.’

Investigating Gardaí are currently appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage and were travelling on the R466 at Gortnaglogh at the time of the accident are asked to make the footage available.
