Tramore RNLI rescued two people and a dog yesterday afternoon after their boat broke down and began drifting towards Tramore Beach.

The 18-foot boat was experiencing engine problems, with its anchor unable to safely hold it clear of the beach.

The Tramore lifeboat was launched at around 4.50pm following a request from the Irish Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Coordination Centre.

At the time, sea fog had reduced visibility across Tramore Bay, while a south-westerly Force 3 wind was gusting to Force 5.

The lifeboat was helmed by Fergal McGrath, with Will Palmer and Nóirín Phelan also on board.

When the crew reached the vessel, the two people and dog were found to be safe, well and wearing lifejackets.

Following a risk assessment, the lifeboat crew decided the safest option was to tow the boat to Tramore Pier, as it was unable to make safe onward progress and was presenting a potential hazard to other water users.

Speaking after the call-out, Tramore RNLI Helm Fergal McGrath commended those on board for wearing lifejackets and calling for assistance when they needed it.

He also reminded anyone heading out on the water to carry a reliable means of calling for help.

Anyone who gets into difficulty at sea is advised to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
