Waterford City and County Council says public lighting along Tramore Promenade is expected to be fully operational by the first week of December, as residents continue to raise concerns about prolonged outages across the town.

The council has confirmed that upgrade works are currently underway, with a contractor on site replacing lighting infrastructure.

New lighting columns have already been installed along Strand Road, with ducting also in place. The next stage will involve wiring the lights and establishing a new connection.

Once those works are completed, the contractor will move to the Promenade, where existing columns will be replaced and connected, allowing ESB Networks to make the lights operational.

The council expects the project to be completed by approximately the first week of December.

However, a separate issue affecting public lighting in the Riversdale estate remains unresolved.

Residents have reported that streetlights in the area have been out since February, with concerns raised about the length of time it is taking to restore the service.

In its response, the council said the problem is due to the presence of concentric cabling throughout Riversdale.

It says a new ESB connection, ducting, cabling and public lighting columns are required to address the issue.

However, the council has indicated that any upgrade is dependent on the overall cost of the works, with no completion date provided.

Concerns have also been raised about lighting outages on the main road passing Tommy Farrell’s and on approach roads to the ring road.

Residents have told WLR that elderly people have fallen in poorly lit areas over the past year, adding to calls for urgent action.

The prolonged outages have prompted questions about responsibility for maintaining public lighting, particularly where third-party contractors and ESB Networks are involved.

Residents have called for greater clarity on who is responsible for resolving the outstanding issues and when they can expect the lights to be restored.

The council’s response provides a December timeline for the Promenade works, but the future of the Riversdale lighting remains uncertain.
