There are Status Orange and Status Yellow rain warnings in effect across parts of the country this weekend as rain batters down.

The warnings came into effect in the early hours of Sunday morning as rain poured down overnight.

Leinster and Munster are the most affected, with Connacht and Ulster, for the most part, free of weather warnings.

As of 6am on Sunday, a Status Orange rain warning is in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork and Waterford.

Met Éireann warns of ‘very heavy thundery rain and blustery conditions,’ with flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions all potential impacts.

The weather forecaster added: ‘In addition, the combination of Spring tides, surge and strong onshore winds may result in wave overtopping along southern and southeastern coastlines.’

The weather warning remains in place until 10am.

The Status Yellow rain warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan and Munster came into effect from 4am, and remains in place until 11am.

Similarly, Met Éireann warns of ‘heavy thundery and blustery conditions,’ with localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions all things to be aware of.

It comes ahead of what is said to be a major weather change entering the new week as a deep Atlantic low-pressure system hits the country.

There will be some reprieve on Sunday night and throughout Monday with long dry and bright spells of sunshine and just a few isolated showers.

Tuesday will be wet and windy, with a continuation of these conditions on Wednesday. The forecaster has also noted blustery, heavy and possibly thundery showers on Wednesday.

‘More mixed conditions to follow for the rest of the week, with good spells of dry weather and lighter winds, though occasionally breezy, with some rain or showers around,’ they added.

‘There’s a chance that it may become settled during next weekend.’

At the moment, Saturday appears to be the best day of the week as rainfall totals are expected to be above average for the week ahead.

The south and west will be the worst hit for rain throughout.
