Waterford has, once again, received the coveted Purple Flag accreditation, which represents the gold standard of the management of evening and nighttime economies.
In recognition of its commitment to creating a dynamic secure and vibrant nighttime economy, this prestigious award underpins Waterford’s great blend of entertainment, dining, and culture, all the while ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, and visitors in the evening and nighttime economy between the hours of 5pm and 5am.
Key successes in Waterford’s submission include a decade of Purple Flag accreditation, with a strong commitment to the ethos of the programme evident across its ENTE (evening and nighttime economy) activity and partnership working, alongside recognition as Ireland’s most liveable county and cleanest city.
The NTE Pilot Grant Scheme is a standout initiative, funding new events across a range of spaces to generate activity from Sunday to Thursday after 5pm, demonstrating Waterford’s continued passion for developing a vibrant and diverse ENTE.
Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Liam Brazil welcomed the renewal of Purple Flag status for Waterford saying, “I am delighted that Waterford has once again retained its Purple Flag accreditation for 2026.
“This international recognition is a testament to everything the city has to offer after dark. From live music and entertainment to exceptional dining, culture, and the arts, Waterford continues to provide a vibrant and welcoming evening experience for residents and visitors alike.
“That vibrancy has been particularly evident through the Night-Time Economy (NTE) Pilot Grant, which supports a range of creative, cultural, and community-led initiatives. These projects bring a fresh energy and activity to the city centre midweek, during off-peak evening hours, further enhancing Waterford’s reputation as a dynamic and thriving destination.”
Following significant lobbying from Jim Gordon, Proprietor of Revolution and Chair of the Purple Flag Committee, Waterford city received a boost in policing with new high visibility beats being recently introduced, with the addition of 25 new Gardaí deployed in the city centre.
According to Jim Gordon, “The presence of An Garda Síochána further underscores the collaborative approach Waterford takes to creating a safe and welcoming city after dark. “We are determined to continue to grow the city’s nighttime offering, and with our partners, Waterford City and County Council, provide a safe and welcoming city after dark.
“We’d also love to give community and voluntary organisations the opportunity to showcase their musical, choral and creative talents in the city’s public spaces such as John Robert’s Square and the Apple Market to help bring even more energy to the city at nighttime.”
There are 100 Purple Flag destinations around the globe across the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Malta, New Zealand and Australia. This includes world-renowned tourist destinations to small market towns.
Purple Flag has represented the gold standard of evening and night-time economy management for 16 years.
