She was the dazzling dancer who stood beside him on stage for years before he finally realised she was the one.

Now Michael Flatley has been left heartbroken after his wife, Niamh O’Brien, died aged 52.

The Lord of the Dance star’s ‘gorgeous bride of 20 years’ passed away peacefully at the Beacon Hospital in south Dublin after a period of illness.

Niamh had battled a long-standing lung condition that worsened sharply over the past year. Tragically, she was due to fly to the United States for a lung transplant but died before the operation could go ahead.

‘My heart is broken,’ Flatley said. ‘I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend.’

Born in Kilbride, near Ashbourne, Co Meath, Niamh was a gifted dancer from childhood. She competed at elite level throughout her teens and finished fourth in the world championships at just 17.

She then turned professional and became a star in her own right. She danced in Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger, the global hit shows that made Flatley a household name.

For years the pair were friends and colleagues. Then, as Flatley revealed in his 2007 autobiography, he suddenly realised one New Year’s Eve that he was in love with her.

He wrote that she had been right next to him on stage all along. As perfect partners on stage, he said, he knew they could be perfect partners in life.

They married in October 2006 in a lavish ceremony in Fermoy, Co Cork, just a few kilometres from Castlehyde, the 18th-century mansion Flatley had bought and restored. The bride arrived in a Rolls Royce Phantom bought specially by the groom. The guests included a former Taoiseach and a host of Irish showbiz names.

Their son, Michael St James, arrived in 2007.

Behind the castle gates, the romance never faded. The couple kept up a Friday-night tradition of a formal dinner at Castlehyde, always with one dance together.

When Flatley was diagnosed with cancer around Christmas 2022, it was Niamh who held him together. He later recalled turning to find her there after the phone call, and how her hug made everything seem a little better.

Just last year he insisted he could not remember them ever having cross words. Of everything his career had given him, he said, his wife came first.

In a statement, the Flatley and O’Brien families said they were devastated by her sudden passing. They thanked the staff at the Beacon and asked for privacy.

‘She was the most loving mother, wife and person,’ Flatley said, ‘and our lives will never be the same without her.’
