A Waterford councillor has proposed introducing free overnight parking in Council-operated car parks until midday on Saturdays.
Cllr Adam Wyse raised the proposal at the latest plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council, arguing it could encourage people to spend more time in Waterford City and Dungarvan.
Under the proposal, motorists who drive into Waterford on a Friday evening and decide to leave their car behind after having a drink would not have to worry about parking charges early the following morning.
Cllr Wyse said it would allow people to return later on Saturday morning to collect their vehicle, potentially encouraging them to spend more time and money in the area while doing so.
“One car. Two visits,” he said, suggesting people returning for their vehicle could also stop for a coffee, go shopping or spend time in the city or Dungarvan.
The Council executive has agreed to examine the proposal, according to Cllr Wyse.
He said concerns were raised that motorists could leave vehicles in spaces for extended periods and potentially “hog” parking spaces.
However, Cllr Wyse believes the potential benefits to Waterford’s city and town centres should also be considered.
He said making it easier for people to visit Waterford could help create busier and more vibrant centres.
The councillor said the proposal could now be considered as a promotional offer for the upcoming Christmas season.
He also expressed hope that privately-operated car parks would consider taking part if the initiative goes ahead.
