Over 900 speeding fines on the N25 in South Kilkenny were cancelled due to camera issues, a report from the State’s Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) has found.

Between May and June last year, Gardaí had issued 914 speeding fines with the offence location listed as the N25, Ballynamona, Mullinavat, Co Kilkenny, when the correct location was Glenmore, not Mullinavat.

Each of these notices was cancelled, resulting in a loss of €146,240.

Refunds were issued to 208 motorists who had already paid their fines when the error was discovered.

The issue was rectified, with the static camera back up and running by July last year.

Meanwhile, an issue was also recorded with a speed camera on the N17 in Mayo which was “operating effectively, but it did not have a valid certification of calibration”.

A total of 1,781 speeding fines were issued before the correction was made, resulting in a loss of €299,260.

Gardaí refunded 923 motorists who had paid the fine before the error was identified.
