“Gaeilge sa Ghalltacht a Dó: An Chéad Chlár – Siobhán Uí Mhathúna”, presented and produced by Roseann and Catherine Foley, has been nominated for an Oireachtas Media Award in the category of Irish Language Radio Programme of the Year on Commercial Radio (Clár Gaeilge na Bliana ar Raidió Tráchtála).

The nomination is a significant recognition for WLR and for the work of Roseann and Catherine in bringing the Irish language to audiences across Waterford in an engaging and accessible way.

Gaeilge sa Ghalltacht explores the Irish language, its people and its place within Waterford, celebrating those who speak, promote and champion Gaeilge across the city and county.

The shortlisted programme, An Chéad Chlár – Siobhán Uí Mhathúna, is part of the second series of Gaeilge sa Ghalltacht and has now been selected to go before the judging panel alongside the other nominated programmes from across the country.

WLR CEO and Programme Director Michael Byrne said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to see Gaeilge sa Ghalltacht recognised at national level by the Oireachtas Media Awards. It’s a fantastic achievement for Roseann and Catherine, who have put a huge amount of work and passion into producing and presenting the series.

“Irish is an important part of Waterford’s identity, particularly with our Gaeltacht na nDéise community, and we want WLR to play its part in making the language relevant and accessible across the entire county.

“This nomination is a wonderful acknowledgement of Roseann and Catherine’s work and, importantly, of all those who have shared their stories and their love of the Irish language with WLR listeners.”

The Oireachtas Media Awards celebrate excellence in Irish-language broadcasting and media, recognising outstanding work across radio, television and other media.

Rose-Ann Foley said: “Both Catherine and I are delighted to be shortlisted for the Oireachtas Media Awards 2026. We are honoured. Is é téama na sraithe seo ná grá don teanga, and this nomination is a tribute to the guests who took part in the series, Gaeilge sa Ghalltacht a Dó. We want to thank in particular our guest Siobhán Uí Mhathúna, who features in the first program, which won us this nomination. Siobhán chats with Catherine in beautiful Gaeilge na nDéise about growing up in An Rinn, the tragic death of her brother Liam, her love for sport and about meeting her husband, Tony.  She talks about running their business together and her love of competing as she is a champion triathlon participant who has won many sporting awards. We’re grateful in particular to WLR FM and Coimisiún na Mean who have supported us all the way in our productions through Irish.”

The winners of the Oireachtas Media Awards 2026 will be announced during Oireachtas na Samhna in Killarney, Co. Kerry, on Wednesday, October 28th.

Comhghairdeas mór le Roseann, Catherine agus gach duine a bhí páirteach – agus go n-éirí linn i gCill Airne!
