New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has shared his thoughts on a United Ireland, as he spent time with An Taoiseach Micheal Martin this week.

The Fianna Fáil leader is in the US this week to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Week.

He is set to address the General Assembly later on Thursday evening.

Ahead of his address, the Taoiseach spent some time with Mayor Mamdani. The Mayor joined An Taoiseach at the Irish Centre in Long Island City on Wednesday afternoon.

It was here that they called the bingo numbers for a weekly meet-up of Irish-American senior citizens.

During the meeting of the two political figures, the Mayor of New York was quizzed on his thoughts of a United Ireland.

‘It is for them to decide, 26 plus six, what it means,’ the 34-year-old responded.

‘I trust the Irish to make that decision.’

Elsewhere, the socialist praised Ireland for their solidarity with Palestinians.

His praise led to questions on whether he thought Ireland should boycott their upcoming soccer fixtures against Israel.

‘What I would say is that I appreciate the Irish people, and I actually mentioned this to the Taoiseach as well,’ Mayor Mamdani responded.

‘When we’re thinking in New York City as to what is an example of solidarity, it often comes to answer of: the Irish. And how the Irish stood up for dignity and a real belief in human rights and applying it to Palestinians when so many people draw a line and refuse to do so.

‘I will leave that question to the Irish.’

On Wednesday, Mayor Mamdani got a lesson on the history of the GAA from the Taoiseach. The Cork man also presented Mamdani with a Cork GAA jersey of his very own.
