Waterford’s new Outdoor Recreation Plan for 2026 to 2030 is being officially launched today, setting out a roadmap for the continued development of outdoor activities and amenities across the county.

The plan is aimed at encouraging greater participation in outdoor recreation while promoting the physical, mental, and social benefits associated with spending time in nature.

Waterford is one of six counties participating in the National Outdoor Recreation Officer Programme, an initiative designed to support local authorities in developing and enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Councillor Frank Quinlan has welcomed the launch of the plan, describing it as an important step in building on the growing popularity of outdoor activities throughout the county.

Speaking to WLR, Councillor Quinlan said participation in activities such as walking, running, cycling, and swimming has increased significantly in recent years.

“The growth in interest and participation in outdoor recreation in the county is phenomenal at the moment,” he said.

“The more people exercise and engage in outdoor recreation, the greater the benefits are, both physically and mentally.”

The Outdoor Recreation Plan will provide a framework for the development of facilities, trails, and recreational opportunities over the next five years, while ensuring that Waterford continues to build on its reputation as a destination for outdoor activity.

Councillor Quinlan said the county is well-positioned to benefit from the increasing focus on outdoor recreation, with communities across Waterford already embracing a wide range of activities.

The plan is expected to support greater access to outdoor amenities, encourage healthy lifestyles, and strengthen Waterford’s appeal as a place to live, work, and visit.

The official launch of the Waterford Outdoor Recreation Plan 2026-2030 takes place Today.
