A new contractor has been appointed to carry out remedial works on the private water supply serving Woodlands Estate in Portlaw.

The development was confirmed at this week’s meeting of the Comeragh District Council, where councillors were given an update on the ongoing issues affecting the estate.

The council was told that the contractor nominated by the owner of the water supply has now been approved for long term maintenance of the supply.

The new contractor is due to begin remedial works on the water supply on September 22nd, with the work expected to take around two days.

The boil water notice currently affecting the estate will remain in place until the required remedial works have been completed.

Senior Executive Officer with Waterford City and County Council’s Environment Department, Dawn Wallace, said the HSE had identified concerns with the water supply and that the notice was imposed as a public health precaution.

Councillor Declan Clune had questioned why documentation relating to the notice referred to a failed water test from May 2025, asking why a more recent test was not being used and why the issue had not been addressed sooner.

The latest development follows concerns raised last month after the previous contractor, Campion Operations Limited, announced it would withdraw its maintenance and monitoring services from the private well supplying the estate.

The well supplies more than 70 homes in Woodlands Estate. WLR previously reported that the withdrawal followed a dispute over maintenance charges, with concerns raised about what would happen to the water supply once the contractor ceased its involvement.

A connection to the public water network has also been discussed, but that is not expected to happen in the immediate future.
