Met Éireann has warned 11 counties to expect spells of ‘heavy thundery’ rain as the weather becomes more unsettled heading into a new week.

After a few days of high humidity and mixed conditions, the summer weather appears to be nearing its end, though mild temperatures could stick around for a while yet.

Next week, the weather is set to take a turn, with spells of rain or showers forecast alongside windy conditions every day.

Sunday is expected to see outbreaks of rain in the west, with drier conditions, cloud and limited sunny spells forecast for the east.

For Sunday night, Met Éireann said: ‘Patchy rain will gradually clear eastwards later in the night with cloud breaking up and clear spells continuing overnight. Some mist patches will form as winds fall light with lowest temperatures of 11C to 14C.’

Monday looks set to be a wet and windy day for most of the country, with Met Eireann warning people living in 11 counties to expect spells of ‘heavy and persistent’ downpours in the morning.

The counties where the ‘thundery falls’ are forecast include Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo.

This is expected to gradually spread towards the east during the afternoon, with highest temperatures of up to 18C.

Tuesday looks set to be a similar kind of day, with the driest conditions expected in the east.

However, the rest of the country can expect unsettled conditions with sunny spells, scattered showers and a gusty westerly wind.

Met Éireann continued: ‘Cloudy with a few showers developing in the (Wednesday) morning. Rain will push in from the west later in the day as southerly winds strengthen. Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C.

‘Current indications suggest the unsettled pattern of weather will continue (on Thursday) with scattered showers in the west and a mix of sunny spells and isolated showers in the east. Westerly breezes throughout and highest temperatures of 14C to 18C.’
