A man in his 30s has died after he was involved in a two-car road traffic accident on Tuesday afternoon.

The tragedy unfolded on the M4 road westbound at Junction 9 (Enfield), Co. Meath at approximately 2.30pm.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the accident.

The male had been driving one of the cars, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

His body was removed to the local mortuary where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

Gardaí confirmed that the coroner had been notified.

A woman, also aged in her 30s, was also involved in the crash. She was transferred to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The road was closed pending examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions were put in place.

A statement from An Garda Síochána appealed to witnesses to the collision to come forward.

They are looking to speak to those travelling on the M4 near Junction 9 (Enfield) between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday.

Anyone with camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.

It comes following a harrowing 24 hours on Munster roads, with a man in his 60s dying in a four-car collision in Cashel, Co Tipperary on Monday.

The tragedy came not long before a man died in a road traffic accident in Cork in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been removed to the local mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
