A major step forward in the redevelopment of Waterford Airport is set to take place today as construction officially begins on a multi-million euro expansion project.

The development, valued at around €30 million, is expected to pave the way for the return of commercial flights to the south east for the first time in almost a decade.

Plans include extending and widening the runway to allow larger commercial aircraft to operate from the airport, alongside significant upgrades to terminal facilities and parking infrastructure.

The project is being backed by American businessman Kelcy Warren, who recently took control of the airport through the newly established Waterford Airport Ltd.

Commercial passenger services are targeted to return by summer 2027, with ambitions for the airport to eventually handle hundreds of thousands of passengers annually.

Local representatives and business groups have welcomed the development, describing it as a significant boost for tourism, connectivity, and employment across the south east region.
