Waterford Fire Services have brought a major fire at the old Jute Factory site in Tycor, Waterford City, under control following a large-scale emergency response over the weekend.

The fire broke out on Saturday evening (May 9th) at a commercial premises located at the former factory site, prompting an extensive operation involving multiple fire brigades from across the county.

Units from Waterford City Fire Service, Tramore, Dunmore East, Portlaw, and Dungarvan attended the scene as crews worked through the night to contain the blaze.

No casualties have been reported; the building involved has suffered extensive damage. Fire service personnel remain at the site on Sunday morning as operations continue and the area is made safe.

Waterford City and County Council has advised members of the public to avoid the Tycor area while emergency services remain on scene.

Residents in the surrounding area were also advised to keep windows and doors closed due to concerns over the possible spread of asbestos from the affected structure.

Several residents were temporarily evacuated as a precaution, while traffic restrictions were put in place around the old Jute Factory site.

Many local businesses in the Tycor Business have been affected, including Andrew Hepburn from DG Foods.

Electricity and gas supplies were also shut off to several nearby homes during the emergency response.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, and investigations are expected to take place once the scene is fully secured.
