The sudden death of a GAA player sent a local community into mourning over the past couple of weeks, though many have since rallied together to raise money for the young man’s heartbroken family.

Killian English, from Ballydorgan in Fermoy, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 27, and a GoFundMe page was subsequently set up to help his loved ones during this tragic time.

Killian represented Ballyduff Upper GAA alongside various development squads throughout the years and was described as a ‘wonderfully talented footballer and hurler’.

A representative from his club remarked that the young man had been ‘a great friend to so many’.

They added: ‘He carried a smile wherever he went, and his warmth and good nature left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.’

Ballyduff Upper GAA also stated: ‘Killian was a wonderfully talented hurler and footballer who proudly wore the red and white jersey throughout his years with the club.’

The fundraising campaign was launched to support Killian’s family with the ‘significant financial burden of funeral expenses and providing him with the fitting headstone he so greatly deserves’.

It has since raised over €14,000 from more than 400 contributors. The campaign has a goal of €16,000 and anything raised above that will be donated to Pieta House.

The campaign’s organiser, Jason Corcoran, wrote: ‘As Killian’s family comes to terms with this devastating loss, they are also facing the significant financial burden of funeral expenses and providing him with the fitting headstone he so greatly deserves.

‘We are asking, if you are in a position to do so, to please support Killian’s family by making a donation, no matter how big or small. Every contribution will help ease the financial pressure during this incredibly difficult time and allow the family to focus on remembering and celebrating Killian’s life.

‘Should any funds remain after the funeral expenses and headstone have been covered, they will be donated to Pieta House in Killian’s memory, helping to support others and ensuring that his legacy continues to make a positive difference.’

Killian was laid to rest at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Ballyduff Upper on Friday, July 31.
