More than 500 submissions have been made on plans for a major data centre and mixed-use development in Kilmeaden, with a decision on the controversial proposal due later this month.

Crag Rathnew DC Limited and Kent Homes Limited are seeking permission to develop the former cheese factory site and adjoining lands at Blackknock and Adamstown, covering almost 109 hectares.

The proposals have generated significant opposition locally, with residents from Kilmeaden and surrounding areas gathering on The Mall in Waterford City last month to highlight their concerns over the development, as reported by WLR.

Waterford TD Conor McGuinness and local representative Adam Wyse have also opposed the plans.

More than 500 submission entries are listed in relation to the application, with local groups including Kilmeaden Against Industrialisation, the Blacknock/Kilmeaden Residents Association and Kilmeaden Community Network among those represented.

At the centre of the development is a major technology park containing three large ICT facility buildings, each extending to approximately 24,000 square metres.

The facilities would accommodate ICT equipment and associated electrical and mechanical infrastructure, alongside offices, staff facilities, loading areas and emergency generators.

An energy centre featuring 16 gas-powered turbines is also proposed.

The wider development would include a new village centre featuring 48 apartments, a supermarket with an off-licence, childcare facility, community centre, gym, café, health centre and pharmacy.

A solar farm containing more than 43,000 solar panels and a battery energy storage system also form part of the proposals.

The overall development would provide 441 car parking spaces and 267 bicycle spaces, with a new vehicular access to the technology park proposed between the R680 and R681.

A decision on the planning application is due on October 19.
