A Kerry supermarket has issued a sweet pledge to parents as students return to school this week.

Following a summer of record-breaking temperatures, we’re heading into the autumn and with that comes the return of the school year.

Typically, students are collected by their parents or via the school bus, but sometimes things can go awry.

One Listowel supermarket has urged parents of pupils that their shop is a ‘back to school safe place.’

Garvey’s SuperValu Listowel shared a poster on Facebook on Monday, and said: ‘Dear parents and children.

‘As the school year gets back into full swing and the darker evenings return, we want you to know that Garvey’s SuperValu Listowel is a safe place for children to come to if they ever need a little help.’

The supermarket continued: ‘Whether they’re waiting for a lift, need to make a phone call, or simply need somewhere safe and warm to wait — our doors are always open.

‘No questions asked, we’re always here to help. From all the team at Garvey’s SuperValu Listowel.’

Social media users flocked to the comments full of praise for the kind gesture, with one writing: ‘Fair play to you all.’

Another added: ‘And this is one reason I love Ireland. Thank you for keeping the children safe.’

A third commented: ‘You are the best.’

Elsewhere, An Garda Síochána have urged drivers and parents to ensure they are taking extra caution during the school run.

Drivers are being reminded to slow down and stay alert around schools, follow the directions of the school warden and watch carefully for children crossing the road.

Also give cyclists and pedestrians plenty of space and do not double park or stop where parking is prohibited.

Parents are being reminded to plan safe drop off and collection points, talk to your children about safe road behaviour and never park illegally or in a way that puts children or other road users at risk.
