Tributes have been paid to Waterford teenager Katie Murphy, who tragically lost her life in a road traffic collision in Tramore ten years ago.

Katie, who was just 16 years old, died following a single-vehicle collision on the Cliff Road in Tramore on October 5, 2016.

Her uncle, Fr Paul F Murphy, an Army chaplain from Waterford, marked the tenth anniversary of her death with a tribute on social media.

The post received hundreds of likes and comments, with members of the wider community remembering Katie a decade after her passing.

Katie, who was from Ballinamona, was a fifth-year student at St Angela’s Ursuline Secondary School in Waterford City.

She was travelling as a passenger in a car when it collided with a wall near the entrance to the Carrigeenlea estate in Tramore at approximately 8.20pm.

The teenager was brought to University Hospital Waterford, where she later died from her injuries.

Two other teenagers, both aged 17 at the time, suffered serious injuries in the collision, while the driver sustained minor injuries.

Katie’s death attracted national media attention at the time, with tributes pouring in from across Waterford and beyond.

Her school community was left devastated by the loss of a much-loved student, who was remembered for her positive and outgoing personality.

At her funeral in October 2016, Fr Paul Murphy paid an emotional tribute to his niece, remembering her as a cheerful, considerate, energetic and enthusiastic young woman.

Hundreds gathered at the Sacred Heart Church in The Folly, Waterford City, to celebrate Katie’s life and support her grieving family.

Ten years on, the anniversary tribute has once again brought people together to remember Katie and the lasting impact she had on those who knew and loved her.
