An Irish teenager who died in a car crash in Iceland has been named as Hannah Large.

The 18-year-old lost her life in the early hours of Monday, August 31, when the car she was travelling in left the road at Krysuvikurvegur, around 30km south of Reykjavik. Two Icelandic people who were in the car also died.

The car, a BMW, is reported to have been travelling at around 200km/h before it left the road and crashed.

Icelandic authorities are investigating the circumstances, and local media have reported that officers are examining whether speed was a factor, along with the presence of a number of vehicles at the scene.

Iceland’s president, Halla Tomasdottir, led the tributes, writing on Facebook that her thoughts were with the families and friends of the young people who had died.

‘No words can convey such a loss,’ she said, adding that the loss was a reminder of how precious and fragile life is. She went on to urge people to look out for one another.

The two Icelandic passengers were also being remembered in their community this week, with memorial services due to be held on Wednesday evening.

Around 200 young people gathered for a moment of silence on Monday night at Langholtskirkja for one of the victims, a student at Sund High School.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of the case and was providing consular assistance.
