Ireland is set to see very wet weather over the coming days, with ‘heavy and thundery showers’ soon to hit many parts of the country.
While an Atlantic storm is expected to bypass Ireland and move up to Iceland, many counties are set to be battered by heavy rain and winds on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather provided an update on the storm on his social media channels, noting the wet weather that is on its way.
He said: ‘However, that storm in the Atlantic … so if we look here we can see the bigger picture. We can see that low pressure system is going to bring us strong winds on Tuesday.
‘Could bring us more wind on Wednesday but thankfully the worst of it as it peaks it out in the Atlantic and then it heads up towards Iceland as it weakens away.
‘It will also bring some spells of rain into Tuesday and some very heavy showers, scattered thundery showers, possibly on Wednesday.’
Met Éireann has forecast similar conditions for the week ahead, following a ‘dry and bright’ Monday afternoon.
The national forecaster said that Monday night will be mostly dry and clear, though patchy rain and drizzle will start developing towards the morning.
Met Éireann continued: ‘Tuesday will be become very windy with southeasterly winds increasing fresh through the morning, and reaching strong to near gale force and gusty through the afternoon and evening. Mainly dry in the morning, but some rain or drizzle in Munster.
‘Through the afternoon and evening, persistent or heavy rain will spread northeastwards with localised flooding possible. Highest temperatures of 17C to 20C.’
The forecaster added that Tuesday night will see ‘heavy, blustery and possibly thundery’ showers, with more very strong winds hitting coastal areas.
Wednesday will also be ‘blustery with sunny spells and widespread showers, some heavy and thundery’.
Met Éireann said that the winds will start to ease on Wednesday night, with Thursday being ‘dry for many with sunny spells and scattered showers’.
Friday remains uncertain, though there are ‘outbreaks of rain currently likely to move in from the west’.
