An investigation has been launched following the deaths of an Irish couple at a coastal resort in Spain.

The couple was discovered on Tuesday afternoon in a town just south of Valencia, called Cullera.

The Civil Guard in Valencia aided local police.

A statement from the Civil Guard in Valencia told RTÉ that the man and woman, aged 50 and 45 respectively, were found at a residential property in the municipality of Cullera.

‘Both were Irish,’ they confirmed. ‘Their children discovered the bodies in a jacuzzi and alerted the authorities.’

The statement added that evidence was found at the scene ‘pointing to the possibility the couple might not have died of natural causes.’

As a result, the Civil Guard homicide unit is taking charge of the investigation.

RTÉ reports that the children are currently in the care of social services.

The family had been in the area of Cap Blanc in Cullera, a town which boasts around 25,000.

Cullera is a coastal town in Spain best known for its long sandy beaches, medieval castles and traditional rice dishes.

Cap Blanc is a popular beach and residential area in the town and is located near the resort’s lighthouse.
